Can My Car Tow a CampReady Trailer?

Can My Car Tow a CampReady Trailer?

One of the most common questions we get is: “Can my car tow one of your trailers?” The good news is that it’s usually easy to find out. Spend a few minutes checking your owner’s manual and the ratings for your tow bar.

The 4 Things You Need to Check

1. Braked Towing Capacity

This is the maximum weight your vehicle is allowed to tow when the trailer has its own brakes. It’s one of the most important numbers to know.

2. Unbraked Towing Capacity

Trailers over 750 kg must have their own braking system, so this number is usually less important for camping trailers.

3. Trailer Weight (ATM)

ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) is the trailer’s total weight when fully loaded with your camping gear, food, water, gas and other equipment. This is the weight you compare with your vehicle’s towing capacity.

4. Tow Ball Download

This is the amount of weight the trailer puts onto your tow bar. Your vehicle and tow bar both have maximum limits, so make sure you stay within them.

The Golden Rule

Your trailer’s fully loaded weight should always be less than your vehicle’s maximum braked towing capacity.

Also remember: your towing limit is only as strong as the weakest part. For example, if your vehicle can tow 2,000 kg but your tow bar is rated for only 1,200 kg, then 1,200 kg is your maximum limit.

Can I Just Fit a Bigger Tow Bar?

Unfortunately, no. A stronger tow bar doesn’t increase your vehicle’s towing capacity. Your car’s towing limit is determined by the manufacturer based on the engine, brakes, chassis and suspension.

Where Can I Find These Numbers?

You’ll usually find them in one of these places:

  • Your vehicle owner’s manual.
  • Your dealership, which can check using your VIN.
  • The rating plate attached to your tow bar.

What About My Licence?

In South Africa, make sure your licence code is appropriate for your vehicle-and-trailer combination and its applicable mass limits. If you’re unsure, check with the relevant licensing authority. We’re also happy to help you check before you book.

Which Vehicles Usually Tow Our Trailers?

Most double-cab bakkies and larger SUVs, like the Hilux, Ranger or D-Max, can tow our trailers comfortably. Smaller hatchbacks and compact crossovers often have lower towing capacities, so it’s always best to check the ratings for your specific model.
